Servicing Port-a-Potties – Once Done, They're Spotless!
If any rental product has earned a bad rap over the years, it would be port-a-potties. These unsung heroes, officially, emerged onto the American scene during the 1940s. It was during this time when California shipyard workers utilized the port-a-potty prototypes that, admittedly, had little to offer in terms of niceties. Since then, however, port-a-potties have evolved, dramatically. Upscale portable restrooms rival those found in hotels and fine restaurants – yes, they are that nice!
Cleanliness is the Real Issue
From basic port-a-potties to elegant, amenity-filled Luxury Restroom Trailers, the cleanliness of portable restrooms is of the utmost importance for any reputable portable-restroom supplier. Cleanliness is, also, the main priority of any client who chooses to rent one or more portable restrooms for their outdoor event.
As a portable-restroom supplier with almost a half-century of expertise, Westway Site Services, formerly Moore Cans places a huge priority on making sure our port-a-potties and upscale portable restrooms are squeaky clean when they are delivered to every event. Whether the gathering is a farmers' market, an outdoor wedding, a surprise birthday bash, a corporate picnic, or a pool party, Westway Site Services, formerlyMoore Cans' clientele can be assured their portable restroom rentals will pass the 'white-glove' test.
That brings us to an interesting question: Is there a difference between 'sanitizing' a portable restroom and 'disinfecting' one? – Yes, there is!
Cleaning, Sanitizing and Disinfecting
Many people think 'sanitizing' and 'disinfecting' are synonymous, but there is a difference between the two! In a nutshell, sanitizing means minimizing pathogens – up to 99.9%. Disinfecting means killing every pathogen on a certain surface – 100%. This would include the toilet seat, floor, walls, etc.
The steps involved with ensuring a completely clean, sanitized, deodorized port-a-potty/portable restroom, involves a few basic, but vital, steps:
1. Cleaning: All surfaces are cleaned with a solution designed to remove all visible signs of debris. The cleaning solution may have little effect on eliminating or killing micro-organisms – it, simply, 'prepares' the surfaces for a more intense intervention – the sanitizing.
2. Sanitizing: When walls, toilets, floors, door handles, etc are sanitized, those surfaces receive a far-more effective germ-fighting intervention – whether by hand or via a power-wash – than just cleaning, per se. The sanitizing process, as mentioned, is all about removing pathogens, but killing pathogens is what disinfecting is designed for.
3. Disinfecting: Making sure Westway Site Services, formerly Moore Cans' port-a-potties and portable restrooms are truly, hygienically clean, means deodorizing agents must be used. Deodorizers ensure that potential cross-contamination from the first-step cleaning and the second-step sanitizing is not an issue. In the US, disinfectants are certified by the EPA which evaluates this type of product for its effectiveness as well as its impact on the environment.
Because disinfectants have the job of actually killing pathogens, these products are allowed 'dwell' time. This means disinfectants can be permitted to remain on surfaces for up to 10 minutes to work their magic. If not allowed to remain wet and 'dwell' long enough, disinfectants become only partially effective, leaving pathogens, behind.
The Holding Tanks
The contents of the waste-storage tanks must be dealt with, as well. They are hooked up to large hoses which allow the contents within the portable restrooms' holding tanks to be pumped out and deposited into tanker trucks with large storage units and freshwater supplies. Freshwater is introduced into the portable restrooms' evacuated holding tanks and a deodorizing agent is added, as well.
The blue deodorizing agent is powerful and includes disinfectant properties to combat unwanted aromas. Biological additives such as enzymes and microbes can, also, be added to the freshwater to feed on odor-causing bacteria.
After it's all said and done, cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting must be utilized as three distinct steps to ensure pathogens are killed and eliminated. At Westway Site Services, formerly Moore Cans, the satisfaction of our patrons is our most important goal.
